How Much Weed Mat Do You Need? Use a Weed Mat Calculator
One of the most common mistakes when buying weed mat is purchasing material based only on the total area.
For example, if your area is 10 metres long and 5 metres wide:
10 × 5 = 50 square metres
So you might assume that you simply need 50 square metres of weed mat.
In practice, the actual requirement depends on how the rolls will be laid.
Why Roll Layout Matters
Weed mats come in different widths.
WeedMat Pro currently offers several widths depending on the product.
For example, our 100 GSM Sulzer black weed mat is available in:
1.15 m, 2 m, 3 m, 4.2 m and 5.25 m widths.
Our 75 GSM mat is available in 2 m width, while our 100 GSM Circular mat is available in 2.1 m width.
Choosing the appropriate width can affect:
- Number of sheets required
- Number of joints
- Amount of overlap
- Number of fixing points
- Cutting and wastage
- Overall installation effort
Basic Area Calculation
The basic formula is:
Length × Width = Area
For example:
10 m × 5 m = 50 m²
But this is only the starting point.
Don’t Forget Overlap
When multiple sheets are placed next to each other, they should overlap rather than simply meeting edge-to-edge.
Overlap helps prevent gaps from developing between adjacent sheets.
Your actual material requirement therefore needs to account for the planned layout.
Plan the Direction of the Rolls
The direction in which you lay the rolls can also make a difference.
A good layout can reduce unnecessary joints and cutting.
This is especially important for larger areas.
Use Our Weed Mat Planner
To make this easier, WeedMat Pro has created a Weed Mat Planner.
You can enter your area dimensions and compare available mat widths to plan your installation.
The objective is simple:
Measure → Plan → Calculate → Buy
rather than:
Guess → Buy → Discover you need more material
